God, this book helped define me as a person.
I read this as I was just beginning to come to terms with myself as a lesbian. It is an emotional rollercoaster and if you decide to read this book, please know that it comes with all of the trigger warnings. I remember after I finished the last page, I just sat there. And then I probably had a good, cathartic cry. This book made me feel connected to AFAB queer people throughout history — for the very first time, I felt like I had been told an account of our history by one of us. Never had I felt more grounded in my understanding of my own queerness.
I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially anyone who is struggling with what it means to be queer.
The author, Leslie Feinberg, made it hir mission to have the book free and accessible to all, so you can download a PDF copy of it here. As a side note, I’m currently seeking the Chinese translation for a friend, so if you know where I might be able to track it down, that would be greatly appreciated!
